Workplace fatigue: Chief among fatality causes yet most don’t test it

A study showed 65% of all mining haul truck accidents involve fatigue as a major factor.
Doctors sleeping less than 5.5hrs sleep, will make between 3 and 7 times as many mistakes as better-rested colleagues.
A severely fatigued worker is likely to be impaired to the same extent as having a blood alcohol of 0.10+.

The elephant in the room is we already know consecutive shifts of 12hrs duration catch up VERY quickly with people.

You do that for 8:6 (that’s 8 x 12hrs straight) or even 2:1 (14 days straight), and we are talking accidents waiting to happen.

So why do so few workplaces have a FUNCTIONAL fatigue risk management system, and even fewer TEST their people for fatigue impairment before they start a dangerous job?

Whatever the answer, Incident Analytics suggests these steps:

  1. First decide if your organisation has a problem and if your culture is a factor
  2. Look at work structures, schedules, environment and determine impact
  3. Source HIGH-QUALITY fatigue management awareness training for your people
  4. Decide whether wearables or screen-based, and source a solid fatigue-testing platform
  5. Wrap this up as a legitimate operational reliability metric
